14s Royal Flush

A tremendous display of football was on show today at Prestwick Academy from AUFA 14s side.

The players involved were showing some nice passing moves around the park with a great willingness to get back and defend when required and the Ayr players up front were connecting well as well.

Sean McKenzie was making a nuisance of himself in front of goal with an opportunity being saved on the quarter hour mark and he followed this up shortly afterwards with another attempt that was well saved once again by the Queens keeper.

Just before half time it was McKenzie who grabbed the first goal of the match with a superbly placed curling shot from 18 yards out that beat the outstretched hands of the goalie. It only took four more minutes for McKenzie to add another after some nice midfield play ended with the ball being played into the box for the striker to finish off a well worked move.

It was well into the second period before Ayr had a sniff at goal again although with the calibre of the players in this side, that's all they need. After a series of passes outside the box, Ryan Wilson turned his defensive marker, moved into the box and knocked just wide.

Just prior to the end of the second period Donnie Campbell was unlucky not to score as he firstly hit the crossbar with a skelping shot after receiving the ball from a corner and then when he tried lobbing a stranded keeper from 25 yards, he watched agonisingly as it bounced on top of the goal netting instead of inside the woodwork.

10 minutes into the third period Ayr added another goal, this time from Roy Barr as he pounced on a deflected shot to head home to put the Ayr side on easy street.

Ayr had changed their keeper around the half way mark of the match, giving a trialist the opportunity to shine but he had rarely been troubled but when called upon he managed admirably with any trouble aimed his way. His biggest interaction of the half came around the 75 minute point when he pulled off a great save from point blank range to keep the visitors at bay.

Up to this save, it had been all Ayr and their dominance didn't wane as Sean McKenzie again fired at the Queens keeper but the shot was saved and he couldn't add to his tally in this match.

With 2 minutes remaining though, Ayr's keeper couldn't keep a thunderbolt shot out to give the visiting team a consolation goal and as we all thought that time was up, Donnie Campbell fired into the top of the net after receiving the ball at the back post from a long cross from a corner.

Coach Gary Gibb was ecstatic at the end stating "That was an excellent performance from each and every one of the players today. From front to back, we dominated and after last weeks long distance trip to Elgin, its good to be back on home ground AND be back home in time for dinner!"

Squad today;
Lewis McMurdo, Craig Bova, Reece Lapham, Lee Williamson, Blaine Swift, Aiden Conner, Declan Adam, Jordan Bruce, Roy Barr, Ryan Wilson, Sean McKenzie, Donnie Campbell, Lewis Nielson, Trialist.
