7 in a Row For 17s
Ayr United 1 vs 0 Morton
Friday night football took centre stage at Carrick Academy as Ayr reached the half way stage in their League campaign. They came up against a very stubborn and dogged Morton team but held on for 3 points.
From the kick off Ayr went straight on the attack when Steven Hutchison played a nice ball over the defence for Scott Aitken to run on to but he steered his shot past the keeper and the far post.
Another opportunity arose again on 12 minutes, this time Deci Milligan played Aitken through but he couldn’t get the ball out from his feet and the chance passed by.
Ayr were well on top and it was almost a spectacular attempt from Lee Lockhart which opened the scoring as he took advantage of a poor clearance by the visiting keeper by returning the ball from 30 yards but saw his shot come back off the bar.
Into the second half and Morton were still holding out as Milligan and Aitken constantly probed but without any luck. However on 65 minutes and it was a spectacular strike which was to open Ayr’s scoring account.
Milligan played Aitken through but hit his shotwide, however he then produced a sublime strike over the keeper from an angle and into the roof of the net.
Then on the 70 minute mark Ayr keeper James Kinniburgh reacted brilliantly to stop a close range shot as the ball dropped on the 6 yard box from a Morton corner but with just 10 minutes left Ayr were back on top and sub Tyler Campbell beat 3 players before rolling the ball across the face of goal to Aitken who was cruelly clipped from behind but saw the referee wave away the penalty claims.
With just minutes remaining, Ayr were yet again denied what looked like a certain penalty as Lockhart weaved in and out of players on the edge of the box only to be brought down before he could let fly.
Coach and mentor Allan Paul said afterwards "This was another hard working performance by the under 17s squad who as a unit are growing in solidarity week after week."
Ayr 15s and QOS 15s entertained the crowd with a cracking game between two strong teams. They produced a great game that Ayr just shaded and the pace was frantic with both teams pushing forward at every opportunity.
The first period was pretty even with Ayr playing more football but Queens always looking dangerous on the counter. Nisbett and Wardrope both had good chances to open the scoring but failed to capitalise. Meanwhile at the other end Matt Howie and Ross Campbell where looking strong and gave nothing away in defence.
The second period was dominated by Ayr who were passing the ball around well with full-backs Campbell and Aedan Keegan always a threat pushing forward, while Forrest and Wardrope took control of the midfield. It was only a matter of time before Ayr scored and that goal came when Liam Anderson created some space on the right and floated in a great cross for Ryan Nisbett who controlled the ball before passing it into the corner of the net.
The third period saw the game stretched as play flowed from end to end. Nisbett, Forrest and Campbell all had near misses while Filippi had a few shots from distance that came close. Queens had a huge height advantage which they duly used to score from a set piece to even things out.
Ayr responded well to the setback and went all out for the decisive goal with Nisbett nearly putting Ayr ahead when he broke through on the keeper who saved well. Ayr eventually scored the goal their play deserved when Campbell played a great ball through for Steven McCarrison who finished well to put Ayr ahead.
Coach Neil Duffy said pitchside, "This was another strong team performance with no failures. The great team spirit in this team shone through with their never say die attitude. To still be unbeaten in the league at this stage of the season says it all about this team who are progressing well and turning in sparkling performances week after week."
