17's Beaten But Unbowed
Ayr United Football Academy under 17's nine month unbeaten run finally came to an end
against Queens Park in their Youth League Cup fixture on Sunday in a game where
little separated both teams.
Within 6 minutes of the kickoff United showed their attacking intent with Cammy Barr
watching his long range shot go just over the bar.
Queens had been trying to take control of the game with little effect until that was
the 13th minute of play when Ayr keeper Kinniburgh had to be smart in saving a free
kick.
In 16 minutes United lost possession just inside their own half and a long ball that
is normally so effectively dealt with caused confusion in the defence allowing the
Queens Park striker to shoot home from close range to make it 0-1.
Immediately from kick off Campbell had a 40 yard shot go just over as United worked
hard to get back into the game. In 25 minutes Marshall had a superb header off the bar
and as Campbell followed up to try and score the Queens Park defender made a superb
last ditch tackle to prevent Ayr from equalising.
Ayr continued to show their intent to equalise in the second half and in 46 minutes
from a Marlow free kick Marshall again produced a great header only for the Queens
keeper to pull off a great instinctive save with his right foot.
10 minutes into the second half as United pressed for the equaliser, Queens broke into
the Ayr penalty area and a great tackle by Marshall was deemed as a foul by the
referee who awarded a penalty any duly scored to make it 0-2.
United continued to work hard, trying to press Queens but it was clearly not going to
be their day when in 70 minutes Queens broke away again with a subsequent low cross
striking Muir, bouncing into the net for an OG to make it 0-3.
United pulled a consolation goal back in 89 minutes when Brown scored from close
range but it wasn't enough to salvage the match.
Although disappointed to lose their unbeaten run Coach Davy Adams stated "It is not
about one game, it is about what these boys have achieved over the season both
in individual development and as a team!"
